For DeKalb families, August at Hopkins Park Pool offered a glimpse of what years of public pool renovations were meant to deliver.

Children tested the slides, explored the splash areas and made the most of a summer that arrived late at the pool.

Now, with the seasonal pool closure behind them, DeKalb Park District leaders are calling the abbreviated opening a success.

The renovated pool operated from Aug. 14 through Sept. 15 after construction delayed its summer debut.

Nearly 8,500 visits were recorded during that stretch, compared with about 21,000 across the 2023 season.

That puts public pool attendance during the short reopening at roughly 40% of the earlier season’s total.

For a facility open only about a month, the turnout gave district leaders reason to celebrate.

The numbers also reflect something familiar to local parents: a nearby place to cool off, meet friends and watch children grow braver in the water.

Still, the enthusiastic response does not mean the renovation is finished and improvements will continue.

Crews have remaining work to complete, including a problem that allows water to collect at the zero-depth entry.

A valve is also needed for bubblers in that area, along with other smaller adjustments.

District leaders have said the pool worked for this shortened season but that they do not want the flooding issue lingering into next summer.

Winterization and staff training are among the next steps as work continues beyond the public swim season.

Staffing grew harder toward the end of the opening, another practical challenge for a facility trying to stretch its season.

For DeKalb residents, the question now is whether the remaining fixes can match the momentum built this summer.

After years of waiting, families finally got back in the water, and their turnout showed how much the pool still matters.
