Homecoming is not only for returning alumni. Thursday, October 8 gives DeKalb residents a downtown evening built around food, activities and a shared dose of Huskie spirit.
NIU’s Homecoming Block Party runs 5–8 p.m. along the 100–400 blocks of Lincoln Highway. The invitation includes local fans, students, employees and alumni, with the general public among the listed audiences.
Choose your reason to go
NIU advertises a kidzone, food trucks, discounts at local businesses, the March of the Huskies and a pep rally. Families can start with the activities; friends can make the evening a downtown meet-up.
Rather than trying to fit every attraction into one visit, choose a meeting place and one or two things your group wants to do. Leave room for dinner or a browse through participating businesses.
The listing does not provide a detailed timetable for each attraction, so avoid assuming that a particular activity begins at five. Check the organizer’s updates if the march or pep rally is your main reason to attend.
A community cause alongside the celebration
Donations will be accepted for No Huskies Go Hungry, supporting the Huskie Food Pantry, Huskie Harvest and Edible Campus gardens. NIU lists a Homecoming sticker for any donation and a custom notebook for a $119 donation.
Those contributions are distinct from food purchases and business offers. Budget for your own meal and check individual offers rather than expecting an all-inclusive evening.
Make Thursday the plan |
The official Homecoming website places the block party within the October 5–11 celebration. This article focuses on the Thursday outing, so you can enjoy the occasion without committing to the whole week.
Choose a downtown arrival plan and allow time to walk to your meeting spot. Check current parking and access information before leaving; no specific space or street closure is promised here.
That is the appeal of a community evening downtown: the university’s traditions share space with the businesses and streets residents use throughout the year.
Bring the people you want to spend an evening with, decide where to meet and let the celebration supply the activity.
All times are Central. Details were rechecked October 4; NIU cautions that Homecoming event dates and times can change. |
