Welsh Park is preparing for another improvement aimed at the everyday needs of visitors and the community events that bring neighbors together. The DeKalb Park District has received a $50,000 Build the Future Grant for a new shelter and related electrical work at the Russell Road park.

The district announced the award August 27. Its project announcement describes a manufactured shelter that can provide shade during ordinary park visits while also serving as an amphitheater for musicians and a gathering point for special events.

More than a picnic roof

The planned location is near the existing spray ground and shelter/restroom building. Electrical improvements to the existing shelter are intended to support the new structure, tying the investment to the practical needs of programming as well as outdoor comfort.

For families, the everyday benefit is additional shaded space. For organizers, the district’s plan offers a focal point for performances and gatherings. Those are the stated uses; the announcement does not provide an opening date or a completed construction schedule.

That distinction matters when making plans. The grant is an investment in a forthcoming improvement, rather than an invitation to visit a finished amphitheater this weekend. Residents can follow the district’s updates for installation progress and eventual event announcements.

Part of a longer neighborhood effort

The district connects the shelter project to the City of DeKalb’s 2018 Annie Glidden North Revitalization Plan. Welsh Park has already undergone a series of improvements, so this proposal builds on an established neighborhood investment rather than starting from scratch.

A 2021 district account of the earlier renovation describes new walking paths, a playground, seasonal splash pad, game area, rain garden, pickleball courts and a basketball court. Work began in July 2020 and was completed in early spring 2021.

That earlier work received a $385,800 matching state grant through the Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development program. The district also worked with the county’s Regional Office of Education on the Basics DeKalb County Toddler Garden.

Viewed together, those projects explain the shelter’s role: a park already offering several forms of recreation is getting infrastructure intended to make gathering and programming easier. The new award should not be confused with the older renovation grant.

What is planned next

For 2027, the district describes a dedicated performance space for Fun Jam musicians, a Movie in the Park event and a concert at the site. Its longer-term aim is weekly summer programming plus additional spring and fall activities.

These are plans, not a published schedule of bookable events. A resident interested in attending should wait for individual calendar listings that confirm dates, times and any participation requirements.

The DeKalb County Community Foundation identifies Welsh Park’s award as one of two 2026 Build the Future grants totaling $150,000. The other supports Safe Passage’s Building New Beginnings shelter campaign.

Know before visiting

Welsh Park is at 651 Russell Road. Its official park page lists basketball and pickleball courts, picnic tables, a playground and other amenities. It also gives the seasonal splash-pad schedule, which ends October 1; do not plan an October splash-pad visit from summer photographs.

For now, the useful next step is to enjoy the existing park and watch for confirmed construction and programming updates. The grant offers a reason to follow Welsh Park’s next chapter, with expectations tied to what the district has actually announced.
